Tip 1- 10 to 30 minutes outside of cage playtime each day.

- enrichment

- Helps release energy

- Bonding with hamster

Tip 2- Block making up food to last the month

- Less time spend making it up daily

- Indicator when you need to buy more food

Tip 3- Using lemon juice for bar biting and plastic chewing

Apply lemon juice with a tissue on area hamster is chewing

​

Tip 4- Using baby food for hamsters

- 100% organic

- Great treat

- Great variation

​

Tip 5- Giving you hamster a sand bath and using children's play sand or reptile sand as a cheaper option

- Helps your hamster coat

​

Tip 6- For cheap disinfectant solution use 50% water and 50% vinegar

​

Tip 7- Ceramic items from the pound shop make great hamster toys

- You can use a candle holder

- Mugs

- Kitchen dish make great sand baths

​

Tip 8- Keeping a folder about your little furry including-

                    - Vet visits 

                    - Behaviours

                    - Diet

                    - Weights

                    - Any notes

The folder is great for when you go on holiday and someone is pet sitting for you. Also, you can check medical notes if your hamster is sick again in the future.

Tip 9- Weighing you hamster weekly

Helps to check for illness

Tip 10- Using lava ledge if your hamster has long claws.

-Older hamster can get long claws and if not sorted out can curl and dig into their skin. 

-Place under their water bottle so, when they drink they use it.

​

Tip 11- Having a hamster routine 

It helps you stay organised and helps your hamster know whats going on so, reduces stress for them.

​

Tip 12- Handling gloves

Helps you and your hamster with feeling less stressful during handling process as you don't show stress behaviours about being bitten.

​

Tip 13- Treat puzzles

Make at home are a cheap option of enrichment.

Tip 14- Changing toys inside your hamster cage

Like humans, hamsters can also get bored so, changing their toys inside their cage once a month in the cage will help.

​

Tip 15- Changing your hamster cage out once a month

The bigger the cage the less often you will need to clean the cage out especially if you are spot cleaning every 2 to 3 days. So once a month you can clean a small spot of bedding.

​

Tip 16- Nesting materials

Using soft hays such as timothy hay can be used as nesting materials as, well as, they help to support hamsters borrowing system.

​

Tip 17- Having multiple hide in their cage

Hamster can be easily spooked as they are prey animals. Multiple hides allows them to feel safe.

​

Tip 18- Block buying food

Buying food to last you the next 3 to 6 months works out cheaper as, you only pay one delivery free or you can block buy when offers are on.

As well as, you can block buy treats and toys

Also, you don't need to worry about running out of supplies encase anything happens.

​

Tip 19- Scatter feeding

There is nothing wrong with using a food bowl,  but scatter feeding you hamster allows for natural wild behaviour and great enrichment.

 

 Tip 20- Using kebob stick for fruit and chews as, a way of enrichment.

​

Tip 21- Home made toys

Cheap at home option and great fun for you to make in your free time. You can use cardboard and pua glue- there are lots of tutorials online.

​

Tip 22- Homemade toys from popsticks

Another at home option many tutorials on youtube, plus you can make shelves. 

​

Tip 23- You need the correct size wheel

Incorrect wheel size causes health problems.

​

Tip 24- Ensure your cage meet the correct minimum size requirements

620 square inches
