What I have learnt from owning a Syrian now compared to 10 year ago.

At the moment I have a Syrian hamster called Barney. I don't know how old Barney is as, he was adopted but I have Barney since January 2019. Barney was the first Syrian I have had in 10 years, as previous I had, have 5 Syrian hamsters. The first in my life was Harry who was my brothers then was Scooby who was the family hamster. Then I had Penny who was my first hamster and the first girl hamster we had had. Then we had Honey followed by custard.

Back when I first had Syrian hamsters the cage size was very different, there toys were a lot smaller, we used hamster balls (which are too small), wheels were smaller. All in all, the toys and cages we have for hamsters today we, did not have access to over 10 years ago as, the care which is seen as cruel today it expectable over 10 years ago.

Therefore, from having Barney, I have seen how much I have changed as a owner. As over time year we didn't have any chew toys my hamster only had a wooden hamster climbing frame. But nowadays, I have tube filled with chews and are continually buying more. As well as, the wheel they had was tiny I can never understand how they were able to run around it as, the wheel I have for Barney now it massive in comparison to the wheels we used to have. As well as, we only had a local pet job which was in a garden centre, which only have a limited range of toys, cages and only one type of food.

But, compared today, there are many different types of pet shops, from pets at home to Jollyies. As well as, local pets shop and online pet shops such as viovet, Erin's pet shop, hamster mail and so many more. As today we have the RSPCA who have set guidelines for basic hamster care, which we need to follow but also, do our research to provide the best possible for our hammies.

My point about this blog, is that it's ok to make mistakes as we all learn. As my care has changed so much other the years to the point I can call myself a crazy hamster lady. As I am continually new information and facts about having hamsters, as it was only this year I learnt about viovet which has been a great resource for getting my hamster supplies in my buzzy life.
